Accessible Design in Integrated Development Environments: A Think Aloud Study Exploring the Experiences of Students with ADHD

This paper was submitted to the proceedings of the 20th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning. The paper was submitted to the conference in April 2025 and accepted in June to be presented in Newcastle and Durham, UK in September. The conference had an overall acceptance rate of 27%.

The paper was submitted as a full research paper to the conference and so presents novel research forming a contribution to the field of technology enhanced learning. The version linked at the preprint button is a preprint and is the version that was initially submitted in April, before receiving peer review feedback. The final version button links to the final published version following peer review, but is not open access.

The paper talks about a study which involved students with ADHD completing coding tasks and then sharing their thought process of how they found the activity and discussing their thoughts on the design of coding environments. The paper found three major themes around the user experience of the students when doing this task and calls for more work on how to consider these themes when designing for users with ADHD.

There is also a link to a GitHub repository containing the materials used to conduct the study including the code presented to the students.
